There are three honest ways to take a card payment on a phone, and most small businesses end up using more than one. None of them need a separate card machine.
1. Tap-to-pay built into your phone. Apps like Square, Stripe Tap to Pay, SumUp and PayPal Zettle turn your own phone into the card reader. The customer taps their card, phone or watch on the back of yours and it is done. It works on most newer iPhones and Android phones with no extra hardware. The typical fee is around 2.5 to 2.75 percent per tap, and the money usually lands in your account in a day or two.
2. Send a payment link or a QR code. When the customer is not standing in front of you, or you do not want to hand over your phone, send a payment link by text, WhatsApp or DM, or show a QR code they scan. They pay on their own phone, on a normal card page. This is ideal for deposits, invoices and remote sales. The fee for these online-style payments is a little higher, usually around 2.9 percent plus a small fixed amount, because the card is not physically present.
3. Take checkout from your website or booking page. If you sell products or take bookings online, the cleanest option is to let people pay at checkout on your own site. They add to cart or book a time, pay, and you never touch a card at all. Fees sit in the same 2.9 percent range, and you get a proper record of every order rather than a pile of app notifications.
What it really costs. Be wary of anything that promises free card payments. Someone always pays the card network, and for you that is the per-transaction fee, roughly 2.5 to 2.9 percent whichever method you pick. Some apps also rent or sell a reader, but for tap-to-pay on a modern phone you can skip that. The honest way to compare is to look at the percentage per sale plus any monthly cost, not the sticker on the reader.
Where Instinctor fits. Instinctor is not a payment processor and we are not the cheapest card rate on the market, so we will not pretend otherwise. What we do is give the website and booking page you already need a clean way to get paid: send a payment link, or let customers check out and book straight from your site, on any phone or laptop. The card processing runs on trusted providers at their normal rates, and Instinctor itself is one platform. You get the site, the checkout and the payment links in one place, instead of stitching apps together.
